Uncover Absence, a new immersive art experience at the Kolman & Pryor Gallery, Minneapolis.

From artist James Holmberg comes an exciting development in the evolution of art and technology. His new app, “Absence Show”, provides another level of experiencing the intricately layered paintings in his solo exhibition, Absence. Holmberg captured hours of images and video while he was making each oil on canvas painting so users will have access to the digital content embedded into each work.

A play on absence and presence, and the physical object versus the memory, Holmberg’s innovative perspective will challenge the viewer to rethink how they view today in a world over-saturated with digital content.

The exhibition features an app-based experience where the creation and destruction of each piece is available for viewing through our Absence app. Receive special content and other words here.

Artistic Response

The depth and access, for example are created by the juxtaposition of layering, lighting and openings that create a play between the additive and subtractive process. Alternating between interior and exterior views, (depicted from varying point of views) additionally suggests an implied yet absent human presence. Shadows and perspective as well as an opening through a plane and spaces of color and light, invite feelings of liberation, perhaps emptiness, sometimes a twinge of apprehension. Nothing is lost or created, but rather transformed.
